Woolworths is the largest supermarket chain in Australia. It is colloquially known as "Woolies", and in Victoria the majority of stores trade as "Safeway". Woolworths was a major supermarket chain throughout New Zealand (NZ) operated by Progressive Enterprises Ltd who also operate the Countdown chain. As of mid-2010 Woolworths supermarkets have been rebranded as Countdown supermarkets in New Zealand.
"Woolworths" usually (but not always, especially in "Safeway" case) lock their dumpsters, or keep them inside a warehouse. Check rather small or middle sized supermarkets of other chains (e.g. in NZ try Four Square, New World, Fresh Choice or SuperValue)
Woolworths Australia has set the commendable aim to achieve zero food waste nationwide by 2015, as outlined in the company's Sustainability Strategy 2007-15. Fresh Food Rescue donates surplus to various food relief charties such as the Salvos and Meals on Wheels. As a result, there has been a noticable reduction in retrievable food waste in Woolies skips since 2010.
