Heraklion is the capital of the island of Crete in Greece.
There are several Laikí (flea markets) in Heraklion. They are open from early morning until midday. You can find lots of fruits and vegetables for free at the end of these markets, around 2 or 3 pm. Markets are held every weekday in different places of the city (ask locals for directions):
- Monday: in Kaminia
- Tuesday: in Alikarnassos and another one in Agios Ioannis Knossos
- Wednesday: in Mastabas and another one behind Jumbo store
- Thursday: in Pateles
- Friday: in Therissos
- Saturday: in Pateles
Also every Monday, Wednesday and Friday 12:00-18:00 there is an Organic Farmer's Market in Georgiadi Park in the city center, where you can possibly score some free food.
You'll find bread or sweets in the bins of the local bakeries. The best is to go when they close, around 10-11 pm. You can ask directly the clerks for stuff to be discarded, or search in the nearby bins.
