Hannover (eng. Hanover) is the capital of Lower Saxony in Germany and offers quite a few opportunities for dumpster diving and freeganism. Also, feel free to join our Containern (= dumpster diving) in Hannover Facebook group here.

Dumpster diving

Any denn's Biomarkt, a German organic supermarket chain, is usually a good option for dumpster diving. As employees usually do not care for dumpster divers and the company, at least in Hannover, doesn't mind dumpster divers either, you can easily and comfortably dive for their thrown away goods during opening hours. They have bio-quality vegetables and sometimes other fancy products such as tofu, organic cosmetics and other high quality products. The employees occasionally put plastic bags on top of the food and other goods, so you might have to dig a little in order to find what you are looking for. Please leave the places as you found them, it will keep the dumpsters (more or less) accessible and fellow divers will appreciate it.

  • denn's Biomarkt, Marktstraße 45, 30159 Hannover-Mitte. This spot is located right in the city center and therefore also quite popular. Walk behind the building complex, turn to your left and you literally cannot miss the dumpsters. The supermarket closes Monday to Saturday at 9pm.
  • denn's Biomarkt, Engelbosteler Damm 20-22, 30167 Hannover-Nordstadt. The dumpsters are located on the „Kundenparkplatz“ (customer parking) on the right-hand side of the supermarket. The customer parking closes (inaccessibly) with the shop, but as mentioned above, just go to the backyard during opening hours, stick your head in the dumpster and leave the employees with a friendly smile. The supermarket closes Monday to Saturday at 8pm.
  • denn's Biomarkt, Limmerstraße 3-5, 30451 Hannover-Linden. This spot is a little tricky. The dumpsters are located behind a wooden fence in the backyard of the house. You can however easily walk through the resident's door of the building (on the left-hand side of the cumstomer's entrance) as well as enter the fenced area where the dumpsters are by using a Triangular key („Dreikantschlüssel“) (diameter: 9mm). You can get such a key at almost any hardware store in Germany, e. g. here. The supermarket closes Monday to Saturday at 8pm.

There are however plenty of other supermarkets that you should give a try, but, unless otherwise specified, preferably during closing hours. Please leave the places as you found them, it will keep the dumpsters (more or less) accessible and fellow divers will appreciate it.

  • REWE, Göttinger Straße 30, 30449 Hannover-Linden. The dumpsters were located behind an easily climbable wooden fence on the right-hand side of the customer's entrance. Actually, the dumpsters are still where they used to be, but now the fence, apparently due to dumpster divers leaving the place trashed, has some kind of grid roof. You, however, will notice a gap between the fence and the grid roof. You can try to squeeze yourself throught that gap. It is definitely still possible to get in, just not as easy as it was before. Please leave the place as you found it, it will keep the dumpsters (more or less) accessible and fellow divers will appreciate it. As the spot is publicly visible and dumpster divers are not welcome anymore, it is advised to not access the dumpsters during opening hours. The supermarket closes Monday to Saturday at 10pm.
  • EDEKA Wucherpfennig, Limmerstraße/Pfarrlandstraße 1, 30451 Hannover-Linden. The dumpsters are located behind a spiky steel, though climbable fence on the left-hand side of the supermarket. As the spot is very publicly visible and dumpster divers are not very welcome, it is advised to not access the dumpsters during opening hours. The supermarket closes Monday to Saturday at 10pm. IMPORTANT: In June 2019 a fellow dumpster diver got caught here when apparently a resident living in the apartments above called the authorities. Therefore please be extra careful and discreet when dumpster diving at this spot!
  • EDEKA Center Krone, Am Bahndamm 17, 30453 Hannover-Ahlem. The dumpsters are located on the far right corner of the supermarket building. As the dumpsters are brought inside when the shop closes, you can only access the dumpsters during opening hours. So you better be quick and try not to get caught! The supermarket closes Monday to Thursday at 8pm, Friday and Saturday at 9pm.
  • ALDI, Davenstedter Straße 234-240, 30455 Hannover-Davenstedt. The dumpsters are located in front of the delivery gate on the far right corner of the supermarket building. As the dumpsters are brought inside when the shop closes, you can only access the dumpsters during opening hours. So you better be quick and try not to get caught! The supermarket closes Monday to Saturday at 9pm.
  • NP-Markt, Geveker Kamp 56-60, 30455 Hannover-Davenstedt. The dumpsters are located behind a wooden fence behind the supermarket building. You can however also easily enter the fenced area by using a Triangular key („Dreikantschlüssel“) (diameter: 9mm). You can get such a key at almost any hardware store in Germany, e. g. here. The supermarket closes Monday to Saturday at 9pm.
  • Combi Verbrauchermarkt, Mengendamm 4, 30177 Hannover-List. The dumpsters are located on the backside of the supermarket. The supermarket closes Monday to Saturday at 9pm.
  • Netto, Allerweg 4, 30449 Hannover-Linden. The dumpsters are easily accessible on the left-hand side of the customer's entrance. The supermarket closes Monday to Saturday at 10pm.
  • Netto, Engelbosteler Damm 58, 30167 Hannover-Nordstadt. The dumpsters are located on the corner of Gerhardtstraße and Engelbosteler Damm behind the supermarket. There is a fence which is very easy to climb or, if you try your luck on a Sunday, you can ask the people living there to let you in (the residents use the same gate and doorbells in front). The supermarket closes Monday to Saturday at 10pm.
  • Netto, Wunstorfer Landstraße 10, 30453 Hannover-Ahlem. The dumpsters are located in front of the delivery gate on the far right corner of the supermarket building. The supermarket closes Monday to Saturday at 10pm.
  • Netto, Am Klagesmarkt 14, 30159 Hannover-Mitte. The dumpsters are located on the „Kundenparkplatz“ (customer parking). The entrance is on the left-hand side of the supermarket. The supermarket closes Monday to Saturday at 10pm.
