Raising chickens is very economical. They will eat almost anything, including melon rinds, leftover food, overripe fruit, old rock-hard bread, you name it. Hens will produce eggs which taste much better than anything you could buy, and on a daily basis. If local laws allow you to have roosters, they can produce young. You can order chicks for very cheap (they will come in the mail). All they need is a small coop to keep them safe from raccoons, dogs and other animals at night, and some space to forage for bugs and grass during the day. Their feces is an excellent fertilizer and they can help with turning the compost (though they tend to eat all the worms).
