Canada is a pretty decent country for dumpster diving and other freegan opportunities.

Most major cities, definitely Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver and Calgary have a Food Not Bombs serving at least once a week.

Dumpster diving

In Canada, there is an increasing trend towards gigantic supermarket chain stores with compressor dumpsters, but that shouldn't deter you from heading out to find those places there are still classic dumpsters for all your easy diving needs. The long winters actually make dumpster diving easier because food doesn't go bad easily.

Legal status

In several provinces of Canada, The Trespass to Property Act or the Trespass to Premises Act grant property owners and security guards the power to ban anyone from their premises, for any reason, permanently. This is done by either posting clear signs, enclosing the area with a fence or issuing a verbal or written notice to the intruder, who will only be breaking the law on return. A recent case involved a police officer who retrieved a discarded weapon from trash as evidence; the Judge ruled it as legal without a warrant, so some have speculated this is enough backing for anyone to raid garbage.
